Barack Obama Portrait

Here is the official portrait with the "Paint Daubs" filter applied in Photoshop....

Ben Rotman

Ben Rotman, Picture No. 3 on MOCA

Picture No. 3, by Ben Rotman
Just looking at this picture without knowing what motivated the artist, I relate to the bondage one can feel in life in general.  I relate to the feeling that life can seem so unfair - here I have hands that want to do something useful and have to clench these posts, wait, seemingly with little hope.
Discovering that this depicts Darfur, I feel sorrow for those who struggle from such violence - and need for freedom.
In either case, this image depicts freedom taken away from an individual - who is losing his sense of self, sinking into possibly an irretrievable despair.
This is certainly not suggesting that anyone in prison is a victim.  I am basing my feelings on the image itself.

Hello Everyone

I am new and awkward with all of this, so I hope this works.  My New Year's resolution included finishing what I started as far as securing a degree.  I have several hobbies, to include sketching (This is the train track behind the Berlin, CT train station), crafts, poetry-writing.  I have a primary interest in the business world - so here I am majoring in business management.  I was self-employed for a few years but most of my working career involved working for other companies - working for the army (Division Artillery Headquarters, as secretary), US Customs Brokerage, Accounting-related positions to include purchasing and accounts payable, Auditing files/files management, and other technical positions requiring regulations, etc.  Right now, I have been working on legal matters which have brought chaos in my life.  I do what I can to keep my own peace and rely on the hope of better days to enjoy stability.  Computer Art is a all so new to me and I took it deliberately to open new doors, to try new things.  Well, I must say, it is a rough beginning for me.  I may have bit off more than I can chew.

Hi Everyone,
I'm Crystal Taylor-Torneo. I'm a sophmore accounting major here at AMC. I'm taking this class for two main reasons
1. I'm one of those people who takes pictures of everything so I am super excited to learn how to use my images to make some photo-art!
2. I live an hour from the AMC campus so this online class is perfect for me to hide out at home and ride out all the snow this winter.
Good luck everyone!

MOCA - Art by Antonio

I'm amazed at what this artist can do. He has taken many different icons and made them into photographs of people...some we recognize. Although this art isn't something I would hang on my wall, I have to respect the genius it took to put these images together. It is impressive that they are black and white and still the portraits are clear. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.

Introduction Halwa Shareef

Hi My name is Halwa Shareef. I am currently entering my third year at Albertus Magnus College. I am a Criminal Justice major. I am Married with three children. I currently work for myself. I own a lingerie business. I am a very avid reader of various novels predominately african american heritage and any and every law book I can get my hands on. I am also very religious based and family oriented. I am very interested in learning the ins and outs of computer art with the hope of expanding my horizons in this area.

Week 1

Artist: Gerhard Katterbauerat
Gallery: Rom15

I decided to go with this piece from Gerhard Katterbauer. When I first looked at this photo I saw a beautiful head shot of a woman: A woman with bold red lipstick/ a foreign neighborhood with a small sleek thru-way/ an age able man in all black. In other countries wearing black determines career or status as well as wearing red lipstick may be a sign of prostitution. If I had to put this story together I would say the colors defiantly are symbolic.

This piece in particular was created randomly on “study trips”. He says he tries to reveal new things (a combination of real and unreal). He uses digital photos with a mixture of 3D rendering, Bryce and Post. He uses these different software’s as well as his personal technique of free-hand drawing.

Moca Art Week 1

The Artist i found to be interesting was Kustokusto , he is and computer artist whose work has been exhibited in Russia and Europe. He has been recognized as best Computer Artist 1997-1998 and in 2000 he won grand prize in the Art on the next in (Japan) he is also known for his computer animation, flash art and electronic works have appeared in installations performances, festivals and on his own website. Kustokusto who is the sobrequent of Leo Stepanov born in Russia in 1959. He still lives in Moscow and studied art from 1985 to 1989.

Artist: Kustokusto

OK I think i got it this time

Kenny R

Ok i already posted trying to see if this one loads a photo of me.

Week One

Artist: Luca Cervini
Collection: Surreal Travel Through Human Feelings
Piece: “Ambivalence”

The artist I chose to write about this week is Luca Cervini. He is a digital art artist who uses photo-collages, digital painting and drawing on the computer to create his pieces. (MOCA) One of his pieces that I thought was interesting is Ambivalence from his Surreal Travel through Human Feelings Collection.

Ambivalence depicts a smaller man within a larger man’s chest. One can conclude that there’s a trapped soul within trying to break free. The mask symbolizes a man acting as someone else on the outside. The bars on the chest give a trapped feeling and indicate the man trying to escape “the madness” to remove that mask. I think Cervini did a great job translating his message through this piece. The masked man being so dominant in the piece overwhelms viewers allowing them to relate to the smaller man who is being overpowered.

MOCA Week 1

Contest of the Month October 2010
Honorable Mention
Christina Siebold
Elegance

I choose this image by Christina Siebold because I liked the symmetry and flow of the lines. It looks like a pen drawing that was redone on a computer and I liked that feel of crossing  mediums that it seems to portray.

Week 1: MOCA Art Gallery

Painted Bottles by Lawrence Taylor

Lawrence Taylor admits that has studied graphic art, photography, and drawing at a basic level. He also has kept some images in the back of his mind for at least 20 years because he did not know how to put the images on paper. But as computers and technology begin to play a major role in society, he was able to figure a way to pull forth the images with computer digital art.

This artist and art piece caught my eye. I too often had images of a certain shoe style that was difficult for me to put on paper. Who knows maybe I will learn some sense of making my images come to life through this art class and some consistency.

What's Due by Sunday Night at 9 pm?

You may know the registrar has instituted a strict new policy on taking attendance.  I am required to take attendance twice per week during the course of this class.  For this week, I am counting one attendance as your  successfully posting a bio to this blog and a short review of an artist found at the Museum of Computer Art.  The other attendance record will be you successfully setting up your Fotothing account and posting at least one picture there so I can add you as a friend (that is as a class member.)  Until you post an image there... any image, I can't add you as a friend.

You may be aware that if you receive 4 absences in the first 2 weeks of class, that you will automatically be administratively withdrawn from class and that there is a $250 fee to be reinstated as a student in the ADP program in order to take any future classes.

Next week you will be responsible for posting your own creative work as outlined on the syllabus and a review of an artist found on MOCA....

Wk - 1 MOCA Artist work review

Sistine Chapel Ceiling Painting

A replication of Michelangelo famous creation done with 3d editing software. Adobe's line of products can be used as well as final cut, or maya.

I'm not very familiar with 3d software but i have taken a Flash course in the past, so my guess is that the original drawing was pasted into the program and then reconfigured to look like this.

Mod 3 Welcome

Good Evening!

My name is Sonya Jaudon and I am approaching my final year at AMC. My interest and passion is helping the elderly. I have been working with the geriatric population since 1981. This interest pushed me into Sociology/Gerontology.

I have one son who will be graduating this year, and attending college majoring in Nursing.

I took an online Art Class in 08 with Prof Nevins and I enjoyed it.

Hope all is well and you guys enjoy the class.

Good Luck!

Nice to Meet You All!

Hi everyone! My name is Kristy Berlehner and I'm a senior here at Albertus Magnus. I am a finance major and will be finished in 8 weeks! Jerry will be my last professor in my undergrad career.

I was born in Erie, PA and came to Connecticut four years ago with my husband of a year and a half, Craig. I work at State Farm Insurance for an agent in Colchester and have been there since June.

I am taking this class because I had Jerry in a previous class which I thoroughly enjoyed. He helped bring out a lot of creativity in me that I never knew was there. I'm really looking forward to, once again, delving into my creativity over the next eight weeks. I also look forward to seeing some of the unique ideas and photos that you all come up with.

P.S. My fotothing SN is: klberlehner
Hi i'm Tony a senior also, CIS major so hopefully this is up my alley. Not my first computer art class but first time using photoshop. Hope to get some good use of it for my personal photos.

MOD 3 Welcome

Hello All,

My name is Natalie. I’m currently a senior here at AMC. Intro to Computer Art is the last of my electives. I have taken digital Photography some modules ago, but am really interested in learning more about Adobe Photoshop CS5 and toning/ color adjusting.

I think this class will be beneficial for all, due to the high demand technology asks of us during these modern times. Technology forces us to continuously educate ourselves to better cope in certain industries.

I plan on learning all I can!

Looking forward to working with you all.

Welcome Letter

January 7, 2011

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to Introduction to Computer ArtI  I have been teaching Digital Photography I and II, The Museum Experience and Two Dimensional Design in an online format for the past four years.... this is the fourth time I am offering Introduction to Computer Art in this online format as well...  The class revolves around creating a portfolio of images.  Your grade will be based on a combination of the portfolio you create and your participation in supporting this online learning experience and of each other.

The first week will be about getting up to speed in creating your accounts and getting your software image editing program working.  Post a short bio to the blog and include a picture of yourself if you can.  Download and install either Photoshop CS5 or Photoshop Elements from the link in the upper right of the page.  Each version is good for 30 days so that will give you enough time to do the class.  Of course you can purchase a copy of either version.  Elements is in the discount chains like Costco and B.J.'s for a discounted price and also available online for as low as $57 here:
http://www.provantage.com/adobe-65088255~7EMR90U5.htm

I don't use campus cruiser for my online classes as it isn't equipped to handle visual portfolios and blogging.   I host the syllabus on my website, jnevins.com.  Take a look around there to look at my teaching philosophy, syllabi, portfolios of my own work, tutorials and more...

Here is a link to the syllabus for this class:http://jnevins.com/introductiontocomputerart.htm

There you will find links to each project, the class blog and the class online portfolio at http://fotothing.com/jnevins

Take a look at the work the day students did this past fall semester on that class blog:

http://introcomputerart2010.blogspot.com/

Things to do this week (Week 1)

1.  Important!.... click on the link in the email I will have blogger send you it will be from Jerry (me)...  There are instruction on creating an account at blogger and joining the class blog... you don't need to create your own blog... just join the class one..  Here is a link to the blog:

http://mod32011computerart.blogspot.com/

2.  Go to Fotothing.com   and create a free account....post a picture... any picture and post your fotothing name on the class blog so I can find you... I will then add you as a "friend" (class member).... I can’t add you as a friend until a picture is posted… If you already have a fotothing account, please post your screen name there.

3. Download and install your image editing program... Adobe gives you a full month free from http://Adobe.com/downloads  You can download Photoshop Elements first then follow up with a new download of Photoshop CS5 as that is expiring and get a full 8 weeks of use for free...

4. Post a bio and picture on the class blog.

5. Post a 1st review of an artist found on MOCA.

6. Begin work on project 1 (week 2) in the syllabus.
Each week you will post an image or two of an artist found in the Museum of Computer Art along with a couple of paragraphs about the work and how your respond to it.  (See examples on last winters blog, linked from the syllabus).  Additionally, you will post an example or two of your own creative activity with an invitation and link to view more of your pieces on your fotothing portfolio.  Each of these elements counts as one attendance.  I need to take two attendances each week.  As you may know, the college has become very strict about this issue.  Anyone not posting in the first two weeks of class will be automatically removed from the class by the college administration.... (sorry it is out of my hands).

Your own creative projects are due no later than Sunday evening each week.  The first one, week 2, syllabus) then should be posted no later than Jan 23rd.

I want you to have fun with this class and not get hung up on any of the technical stuff...  Once you get rolling, you'll see it is fun and very engaging...

Don't hesitate to call me at home if you are stuck!

Jerry Nevins
